A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Up next at Players by the Sea is the Stephen Sondheim musical comedy, A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum. The show opens Friday, Jan. 24, and is in production thorough Feb. 15, on the Jacksonville Beach community theater’s main stage.

Called Broadway’s greatest musical farce, the timeless comedy takes audiences back to Ancient Rome for a unique and unforgettable production. Pseudolus, a devious slave, makes a deal to win his freedom by playing matchmaker for his lovesick master, Hero. Rife with pompous generals, domineering parents, and wiley courtesans, the hilarious Tony-winning musical is a non-stop laugh-fest.

The cast consists of 18 actors, spanning from teenagers to seniors. Some of them have studied theater professionally and others participate because they love being on stage.
General admission is $28, $25 for seniors, students and military. Thursday nights are Student Nights with $14 tickets for students with a valid student I.D. at the door.

Curtain is at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. There will be a two matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2 and 9.
