February 24. Lantern Making with Ed Malesky

The first Jacksonville Lantern Parade debuts on April 7th. The parade will begin at Riverside Arts Market and extend to The Landing. More details can be found at www.jacksonvillelanternparade.com.

To participate you just need a lantern. The Art Center will be hosting a series of LANTERN MAKING WORKSHOPS in February and March to get you ready to participate. Workshops will include adding decorations to customize a commercial lantern, while others will be crafting a lantern from scratch.

Workshops are suitable for adults or children accompanied by an adult. Cost is $25 and you will leave with a parade ready lantern.

This first workshop is led by Ed Malesky, in it; you will be customizing a commercial grade lantern. Learn to paint and add embellishments in order to give it your own unique flair.

This second workshop is led by Marsha Hatcher; in it you will be making a lantern from scratch and embellishing it to reflect your individuality.

March 24, Make Your Own Paper – with Leslie Kruzicki

Let’s have fun and experience the making of your own paper. All Materials supplied.

Tear the newspaper, scrap paper, or wrapping paper into very small bits. Beat the paper and water in the blender, or with the egg beater, to make pulp. Pour the pulp into the flat pan, just the beginning. Students will leave with several pieces of paper of varying shapes and sizes and “decorations”.
