Living My Faith with Kim Moeller of the National Christian Foundation

Welcome to Living My Faith, a weekly show that celebrates the everyday believers who are walking with Jesus not just on Sundays, but in every area of their lives. From relationships and parenting to health, habits, and home, our guests share how they keep their faith at the center of it all. Hosted in Jacksonville, Florida and supported by Christ-centered partners, Living My Faith is a space where real life meets real faith. Today, our host, Morgan Allen, spoke with Kim Moeller.

Kim Moeller

San Diego Area Director for the National Christian Foundation

Short company description:

I work with people to encourage their charitable giving through their donor advised fund, in addition to helping people with tax efficient giving when they have an upcoming sale of their business or property.

Can you share a moment or experience that significantly deepened or shaped your faith journey?

Watching people who are passionate about a cause and then seeing how their generosity radically affects the non-profit or the for-profit company when they choose to invest their charitable funds into it.

In what ways do you actively live out your faith in your daily life — at work, home, or in your community?

I am active in the Barnabas Group, and the local church, in addition to constantly helping non-profit leaders here in San Diego. I run the Generous Girl podcast – in our fourth season.

What encouragement or scripture has been especially meaningful to you in this season, and why?

Romans 12:2 – remembering that we are constantly being transformed and called to have renewed minds that allow us to have the mind of Christ and do His will on earth.

What advice would you give to someone who’s struggling to live out their faith or looking to grow spiritually?

Remember it’s a long game and there are ways that you can enhance your prayer life, your scripture memorization, fasting, that will help you grow in Christ…don’t give up!

Welcome back to another episode of Living My Faith, where we highlight those who are making Kingdom Impact. I’m Morgan Allen, joined today by Kim Mohler with National Christian Foundation, Impact Foundation, and Women Doing Well. Kim, thank you for joining today.

Kim:
Thank you so much, Morgan, for having me. It’s a privilege to get to share how people can live generous lives and tax efficient strategies.

Morgan:
Oh, absolutely. We all, we all need it, you know. So tell me, how are you living your faith? Big question to start.

Kim:
I love that question. So I am an empty nester with my husband now. We raised four kids, and now the focus on careers that I didn’t have the margin to do in those earlier years. It’s fun to watch how God’s brought everything full circle, because my background was financial services for when Kay plans, and now I’m working in the space of what we call the generosity ecosystem.

So I help people to open a giving fund with the National Christian Foundation in California that is a donor advised fund, and it gives you a deduction, and it’s like a private charitable checking account. And you can do that account, use that for all of your charitable giving or granting.

Then the other hat I wear is Impact Foundation. And that allows you to go ahead and take those same dollars that are in your donor advised spend, but you can invest them in for profit companies for a minimum of $25,000. So what people like about that aspect is it’s actually the gift that keeps getting multiplied, or the investment that’s multiplied over the years.

You can invest in faith forward films or like a coffee company in Uganda, Rwanda, and that you’re making a loan or having equity in that company, and those funds come back to you and you can do it all over again.

And then thirdly, Women Doing Well is a wonderful organization that helps women figure out their two word purpose statement. It’s hard coded in your DNA, always been a part of you. It might be inspiring hope, liberating greatness, encouraging significance, and then your passions, which were one thing in college, maybe it was homelessness in college, and now it’s anti trafficking.

Those can change based on seasonality. And then the third piece is your plan, your plan for generosity, how you’re taking your time, your talents, your treasures to live that generous life.

And I focus on all of these things on my podcast called Generous Girl, where we spotlight amazing women and what God has called them to do. But we also always want to talk about, okay, you’re doing like, you know, you’re incredibly successful today, but there is probably a time when you’re barely making it.

And what was that time? How can you encourage all of us to take the next step so that when we hear the woman’s story, we go, wow, if she could get through that, I could take the next step in what God’s called me to do.

Morgan:
This is absolutely amazing. I am just eating it up, and so much to talk about. My mind going wild. I love it. So, first, let’s talk about the piece you said. I love that so much. So that builds a foundation for you to help someone decide, okay, this is what the kind of organization I want to give to, how they can give time, talent or treasure, possibly.

And that’s just such a good first step, I think, into how you can give intentionally. Yes. Hearing that right you are.

Kim:
And it’s definitely more than just your dollars. You know, it’s your time and your stewardship, and it’s realizing that you were created for a unique purpose.

And so we take women through this really neat, detailed assessment that helps them understand that to a purpose statement. So, for example, mine is liberating greatness. And I look at that like you think of Michelangelo and how he carved the statue of David. And David was always in that slab of marble, and he just needed to kind of chip away and sculpt it to let that emerge.

So I love to do that with the people that come in my path and across my life, and where I can help women especially be all they were made to be, step into their calling. That gives me a ton of joy.

So when you understand your two word purpose statement, you might be in your 20s, you might be in your 40s, your 60s, 70s. It also helps you say no to things, because we’re all good at a lot of things. But then when you really understand your unique calling, also your shape, your spiritual gifts, your heart, your abilities, your personality, and your experience, that’s from Saddleback Church.

It really helps you do what you’re good at, and then let someone else who’s good at something else, you can say no to this and they can say yes.

Morgan:
Wow. So you are really helping people create like fulfill their purpose and be the most fulfilled while they do so.

Kim:

Yes, that’s a great way of saying it. And I also really believe, and I’ve seen so many times, the premise is so true that you can’t out give God.

So if we live with this mentality of scarcity, thinking that God doesn’t have enough to meet our needs or the things that are on my heart to help others, then we’re just missing his whole kingdom mindset because he’s a God of abundance. He wants to bless us, he wants to use us, and it’s up to us to really be those vessels that he can flow through to do what he wants to do with the time, talents, treasures.

Because we are only stewards of everything God’s given us. None of it is ours. But when we get to heaven, he’s going to look at us and say, well done, good and faithful servant, but this is how you stewarded things. Look at all the lives that were touched by the little you gave or the much that you gave based on what you were given.

And it just, I think it causes us to fall in love with him more that he would use us, broken people, to accomplish his incredible kingdom goals while we’re here on this earth.

Morgan:

Absolutely. And the story of Cain and Abel, of course, comes to mind in this regard, where when you give your first and your best, then good things will come to you. When you give the scraps and the leftovers, it’s a disappointment to God, and we don’t want to do that.

So I love what you’re doing. So thank you for coming on the show today. If we want to listen to your podcast and get in touch with you, how can we do so?

Kim:
Absolutely. You can go to Apple Podcasts or YouTube. It’s called Generous Girl. And again, it’s all about how generosity is interwoven in these five areas of faith, family, fitness, finance, and friendship.

And then you can reach me at one of my emails, Kim at Impact Foundation Talk.

Morgan:
