Greg:
Hello. Welcome to Making a Difference. I’m your host, Greg Chapman.

Today, I have a special guest with me. She’s known for a lot of things. We’ll let her talk about herself a little bit. But what I’m excited about is we get to hear a story of coaching, not from someone who is a coach, but someone whose life and family has been impacted by it.

So welcome to the show today, Rebecca Maxwell. Rebecca, we’re glad you’re here.

For those of us listening who don’t know, tell us a little bit about yourself, what you do, where you’re at.

Rebecca:
Yeah, I did.

So I am a licensed marriage and family therapist, and prior to that I was in ministry with kids and students.

So I’ve always been around kids and students and their families, working specifically now in the mental and relational health field.

I’ve been married almost 26 years, and I have two boys. So we have been around coaches and coaching and sports and still are. So it’s definitely been a big part of our lives.

Greg:
So it’s like the Maxwell locker room at home for you.

Rebecca:
Oh it is. And both boys are home now. They’re 20 and 22 and they’re both home. So it was loud last night with all the basketball happening.

So yeah, it’s definitely a locker room.

Greg:
I’m sure you miss it when they’re not there and it’s quiet again.

Rebecca:
Yes. It’s weird.

Greg:
Tell us a little bit about your story. You said your family has been impacted by coaches for years.

What’s that like when your boys are playing and you’re watching and seeing these adults impact your kids?

Rebecca:
Yeah. It’s really interesting.

I think that we are either really impacted in a positive way by a coach or we are helping our kids ride it out or navigate a negative impact or not letting it impact them.

We’ve had some great coaches who really care about the kids and develop their character alongside their sports skills.

But there are also coaches who don’t show up in the way we would hope in terms of character.

So we were always either encouraging our kids to lean into a great coach or helping them navigate challenges with a difficult one.

Greg:
Just with what I do for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, I tell coaches all the time that it’s not their job to parent kids. They have parents.

But sometimes coaches have to step in at some level.

So through your boys, what are some of the good things you’ve seen from coaches?

Rebecca:
I think we’ve had coaches who highlighted the strengths of our boys when they weren’t the best player on the field.

For example, one of our sons wasn’t the best soccer player, but he was a great teammate and encourager.

To have a coach recognize that is really meaningful.

And sometimes coaches were able to get the best out of our kids in ways we didn’t expect.

Greg:
Something we’ve learned with FCA is that coaches often coach the way they were coached.

You’ve also seen the difficult side of coaching. Tell us about that.

Rebecca:
Coaches have a big impact.

In my field of mental health, I see how different kids respond differently.

A coach’s approach can be positive for one child and harmful for another.

Some kids are more emotionally sensitive, and harsh coaching can impact their self-worth.

I’ve seen how repeated negative messaging can shape a child’s core beliefs about themselves.

And those beliefs often show up later in therapy.

Greg:
Just because you turn 18 doesn’t mean those things go away.

Rebecca:
Exactly.

Greg:
We have a few minutes left. What would you say to a coach just starting out?

Rebecca:
I would say the same thing I tell parents.

Do your own work.

Check your heart, your motivations, and your character.

You can’t give what you don’t have.

Be intentional about who you want to be as a coach and what kind of players and people you want to develop.

Greg:
You’re developing the future of communities.

Rebecca:
Absolutely.

Greg:
Rebecca, thank you for coming out today.

Rebecca:
Thanks for having me.

Greg:
And to all our listeners, we appreciate you tuning in.
