“Making a Difference” with Christina Banick from Hercules Food Co.

Each week on “Making a Difference,” our host, Wayne Veldsman, interviews people making a difference in their community. Today, Wayne had the pleasure of talking with Christina Banick from Hercules Food Co.

Hercules Food Co. is an alt-meat startup that makes their products using something sustainable, nutritious, and oddly delectable: insect protein (just the protein–no legs or antennae).

How did you get started in your field or work? This venture started as a grad school entrepreneurship project that I worked too hard on because my professor kept telling me it wouldn’t work.

How does your company inspire others? It gets people thinking. We understand that the idea of “bug meat” takes some getting used to, but those who have stuck around to hear about our mission come away more informed about the food cycle. Even if they themselves aren’t interested in trying our product, they usually are excited to share the idea with others.

What are your biggest goals in the next 6 to 12 Months for your business? Biggest goals are getting with R&D to tweak our prototype into a standardized, “sellable” product and to get a proper marketing plan going (mainly YouTube). We want to get the word out and get people excited about sustainable food. More importantly, we want people to try it!
