Our History
1935: Founding of Florida Telco Credit Union on January 28th, our “birthday.” We were one of the first credit unions in the United States, established just after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act into law in 1934.
1977: Our first free-standing branch was constructed. It subsequently opened to the public in 1978.
1988: Our second branch opened downtown on West Bay Street, located in the Bellsouth Tower.
1991: Florida Telco Credit Union merged with Gulf Life Employees Federal Credit Union, redefining our membership eligibility to include insurance companies and professionals.
The Baymeadows and Orange Park branches opened.
1999: Florida Telco Credit Union obtained a community charter, expanding membership eligibility to include individuals who work, live or worship in the five northeast Florida counties in our surrounding area (Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns) as well as any active or retired phone company employees and their families.
2006: Membership eligibility expanded to include the six adjacent outlying counties of Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Flagler, Putnam, and Union, opening membership to individuals who live, work or attend school in any of the eleven counties. Definition of family members updated to include any person related to the primary member by blood or marriage.
Florida Telco Credit Union initiated focus on developing our local community by launching Business Lending, allowing us to provide funding for small businesses in our area.
2010: Official change of name to 121 Financial Credit Union.
2011: Introduced mobile banking service to members.
2015: Merged with Duval Federal Credit Union, welcoming their members into the 121 family.
2016: 121 formed a new management team and began a system-wide technology upgrade.
2017: Moved into our new Riverside Headquarters location.
