About Us : In 1996, Vision Is Priceless Council, Inc. was founded in Northeast Florida by a group of volunteers and eye care professionals dedicated to providing access to free vision screenings and eye care. The individuals previously served as board of directors of the Northeast Region of Prevent Blindness Florida chapter. Recognizing there was an increased need for free comprehensive vision care, the group separated from the national organization and created Vision Is Priceless to better meet the vision needs of people in the community. All donated dollars and services would now stay local.

The mission of Vision Is Priceless is to serve as the premier community resource for improving the vision health of First Coast children and adults through vision screening, referral, and education. Our goal is to eliminate vision problems for children and adults to improve their chances of success in life. Vision Is Priceless provides free vision screenings and free vision exams/specialty to care for children and adults in Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau, and St. John’s counties. Last year, we provided free vision screenings to 45,060 children and adults. Our volunteer doctors provided 1,194 free comprehensive eye exams, 267 specialty exams, 1,093 prescription glasses and performed 50 free eye surgeries for children and adults in need.

Simply having healthy eyes cannot make a child or adult succeed in life. However, prescription glasses can be a powerful tool that helps eliminate a significant barrier keeping children from exceling in school or adults from improving their life outcomes. A child needs many skills to succeed in school. Good vision is one of them. Reading, writing, chalkboard work, and using computers are among the visual tasks students perform daily. A child’s eyes are constantly in use in the classroom. When his or her vision is not functioning properly, education can suffer. The sooner eye problems are identified and addressed, the better the outcome in childhood and beyond.

By providing adults with the opportunity to see clearly, many of our clients have become more productive citizens and contribute more to society by going back to work, receiving better employment, entering a training program or finishing their education. Without Vision Is Priceless’ vision care programs, many low-income, uninsured individuals may forgo vision care resulting in possible loss of sight, contributing towards unemployment or underemployment, which can cause even more dependency on other social service resources.

When we see better we have the chance to live better. Vision Is Priceless, through the generosity of our donors and volunteer doctors is giving the gift of sight to those in need in our community.
