Each week on “5 Minute Salute,” our host Dan Bean talks to veterans who have successfully transitioned from active duty to the business world. This week, Dan sat down with John Durrett from US Bank.

What Branch of Service where you in and for how long?: I was in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves with a total of 8 years active and 4 years reserve.
After your service ended, how did you spend your time? Did you go back to school? Immediately enter the private sector?: After my first enlistment, I went directly to the private sector and worked for AT&T. During this time I used my GI Bill to pursue my Bachelors. While I was working for AT&T, I remained in the reserves and was mobilized to GTMO in 2005. Once demobilized, I changed careers and worked as a DoD contractor at GTMO. During this time I completed my BA and began pursuing my MBA. I changed careers again after leaving GTMO and re-entering civilian life.
Are you a member of any veteran organizations? If so which ones?: No
What has been your career after your service came to an end?: I have been a communications technician for AT&T, a Contract Intelligence professional, a Financial advisor, and a Project Manager.
Was there anything or anyone that helped you during the transition from military to civilian life?: Aside from God and my wife, not really. I think applying the warrior mindset of “achieving the mission regardless of obstacles” to my transition helped. Also understanding that when you fail at something it doesn’t mean you are a failure.
